Windows Media Audio Professional (WMA Pro) is an improved lossy codec closely related to WMA standard. It retains most of the same general coding features, but also features improved entropy coding and quantization strategies as well as more efficient stereo coding. Currently, the Mac Pro 2013 is still supported hardware (as it should be as Apple stopped selling it only in 2019), but the relatively low sales likely mean it may be dropped in future Mac OS updates. It can run Mac OS 11.x Big Sur but does not support Sidecar (as of yet).

Update: Apple has released an update that fixes this security vulnerability. See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208315 for more information.

A developer in Turkey recently tweeted about a significant security vulnerability in macOS High Sierra

For those who don’t know, the “root” user exists on all Mac and Linux boxes and is the ultimate super user. There’s nothing that root cannot do. Getting access to the root user is considered the ultimate goal when trying to compromise a computer, whether that’s locally or remotely through the Internet or local intranet. Getting unauthorized access to the root user is a bad, bad thing.

As such, our first thought was no, that can’t possible be true, but sure enough it was as trivially reproducible given the steps provided in the tweet. Even worse, it’s possible to sign in as root from the login screen with no password whatsoever (you’ll end up logged in as “System Administrator”)! How could such a thing happen?

Well I don’t have an answer for how but we were able to figure out what is happening. By default the root account is supposed to be disabled, but by default the root user also has a blank password. For some reason, the system is first enabling the root user (which is supposed to be disabled by default) then doing a password check. With no set password, submitting a blank password matches and you’re in.

There is an easy fix: set the root user’s password. There are two ways of going about this, the command line via Terminal, iTerm, and the like, or through the Directory Utility tool.

On the command line, you can set your computer’s root password thus:

This will first ask you for your current account password (as with any use of sudo or an installer). Then you’ll be asked to enter a new password twice.

Alternatively, in Directory Utility, you’ll need to unlock administrator changes (which can be done with “root” and no password here too!):

Once unlocked, go to Edit and Change Root Password. Enter in the new password twice.

Disabling the root account will not close this hole because the system insists on re-enabling the account as soon as a log in as “root” is attempted.

With an explicit password set, you’re now protected against this vulnerability.

  1. Have you informed Apple through the proper security disclosure channels? Not great practise to broadcast this to the world before giving them a chance to fix it.

  2. Paul: I agree with you that blasting this across Twitter was not the best way of disclosing this issue. However, we did not originally disclose this bug. Once the tweet went live, the window for responsible disclosure unfortunately ended. With that, I am just providing information here on how to fix your machine before Apple gets a fix in themselves.

  3. This article is useful to each and every Mac user. I’m thankful for that.

  5. How to Protect the root user on macOS High Sierra you share is quite meticulous and easy to understand. I will install it shortly. thank you very much.

These games are so cool and i'm thinking on buying a few of them. But what coding language and engine do you guys use?

This was made in Game Maker, but we also use Unity.

That's very interesting. How do you achieve the simple line art smooth style?

Please update MacOS version, it didn't work on Catalina !

Just downloaded the Mac version but when I run it a dialog appears and just says:

'Unable to find game!!:'

There's nothing after the colon, the only button is OK and quits the app. I'm on a slightly old version of OSX, Sierra (10.12.6) - so maybe it's a compatibility thing?

Hi! This is an issue we're having with OS X. Move the game to a different folder and then run the game again. This usually fixes it!

i wish i had money to buy this game :(((((((((((((((((((

Hello, I tried this game on OSX first, but it doesn't look working properly, so I tried on Windows and it looks fine. My friends who bought this game, they said they had the same problems on Mac. Will you fix the bugs in the future?

Yes, we had multiple reports of this being an problem on OSX. We're having weird issues porting some game maker games to mac, and in dino game a lot of different stuff breaks after a while of playing. Aran and me will try to fix dino game this friday. If we don't manage to, we might take down the OS X build so that not more people buy it in a broken state. Thanks for reporting the bug!

Hey! Really wanted to play this, but experienced some bugs during the game. I basically drop through ground, or something like that, sometimes dino's legs drop through, and it's legs are spread across the entire map. I'm playing on Mac OSX 10.13.4.

I've recorded a video for you to see, what is happening, althrough, this happens not only on these geyser spots, it can happen at random anywhere.

We're aware of this and we'll try to fix the problem this friday! Thanks for reporting.
